Merit Badge Counselor Registration Process

Foothills District Merit Badge Counselor Registration Guidelines 

Merit Badge Counselors must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America.  The Atlanta Area Council administers registrations, and has designated the District Advancement Committee as their representative in approving MBC applications.

One purpose of Merit Badge Counselor registration is to verify that the individual is qualified by vocation, avocation or training, to be an instructor of a particular merit badge. A merit badge counselor information form is required for this reason.

Please follow these procedures in order to properly register the Merit Badge Counselors for your troop.

The troop Committee Chair or the Advancement Chair should interview the prospective counselor to determine their qualifications for the subject MB. The prospective counselor should read and understand the pamphlet Merit Badge Counseling.  This pamphlet is available in print form at the Scout shop or the information can be found at:  http://www.meritbadge.com/info/cnsling.htm

What you must submit to register as a Merit Badge Counselor. Please read carefully!

  1. BSA adult application  This application is necessary even if you are already registered in another position.  If Merit Badge Counselor is the only position you are applying for, then you must fill out the entire application, including approval signatures from the troop.  The “Position Code” for Merit Badge Counselor, which is required on the application, is 42.  If you are currently registered as an adult leader in another position, then you only need to fill out the information portion of the application, not the reference section, and sign the application. No troop approval signatures are required.
  2. BSA Merit Badge Counselor Information form #34405. It is available for download on the District Website http://foothillsbsa.org  Be sure to list all information for each Merit Badge you will be counseling.  Applications that do not include this information will not be approved.  A succinct sentence or two is sufficient. For additional space use another sheet or use the back of the form. Though it doesn’t ask for it, please put your Troop number at the top of the form.

Only original forms will be processed.  Please do not send copies.

Applications older than 6 months will be returned unprocessed.

The District does not keep the forms that are submitted.  Once the application is approved and the data recorded for our District list, all material will be forwarded to Council for final approval and registration.

Make sure to complete all the information requested.  Incomplete applications will not be approved. 

Once you are registered as a merit badge counselor, you do not need to re-register, unless you wish to add additional merit badges to the list of those you are qualified to teach.

Each year troops will be given the opportunity to delete from the list the names of adults who are no longer active as merit badge counselors.

There is no registration fee for the position of Merit Badge Counselor.  Do not send any money.

 Do not take forms to the Council Office as this will only delay the approval process
